Immediate Landscape
2023-
Immediate Landscape documents, or rather renders, the landscape I find myself in, my constant immediacy. I began, intuitively, to create images that seek to stabilize the entropic nature of these landscapes, all of them wounded by history, all hastily bandaged, all left hanging, all simply left to be. It’s a tribute to this presence that is out of place, disturbed, dazed, and left to exist anywhere.
These images are a pretext for me to visually explore the environment I find myself in. First in Iași, then in Călărași (Republic of Moldova), the city where I grew up, and later in Chișinău, Bucharest, and wherever else I happened to be.
These images have followed my personal trajectory, marked by migration, belonging, identity, and loneliness. I moved to Romania during the pandemic, and this made it hard for me to feel that I could belong to the place.
This social obstacle pushed me to be, alone, on the streets of the city, photographing, and thus to feel, from a distance, that this place could take me in. Today, social integration is no longer the center of the project. I live in Bucharest, and the series continues on this territory, where the place’s own problems come to the forefront, addressed precisely from the point where I stand and look.
Over the years I’ve spent photographing, all the gathered images have gradually begun to make sense within their own chaos. The project is an ongoing work of artistic photographic documentation, begun in 2023. Today, the series is, rather, an archive of over 50 images, a personal territory defined by my presence in it, but also closely tied to the political and economic processes happening around it, which have brought it to its current form.
Immediate Landscape forces me to accept the heterogeneity of the world I live in.
